I've taken two different groups to Rama, one that could handle the lake trek comfortably and one that couldn't, and treating them the same both times would have ruined one of the two trips.
Rama Meadows itself is reachable by jeep and needs no real walking beyond wandering the meadow on flat ground. Rama Lake is a further trek from there, uphill, uneven underfoot in places, and genuinely tiring for anyone who isn't already a fairly regular walker. Online descriptions sometimes blur the two together as one outing, and that's where groups get into trouble, someone unprepared for the lake trek pushes through it anyway because the itinerary said so, and has a miserable afternoon instead of an enjoyable one.
Match the outing to who's actually walking
Before you commit to the lake trek, be honest about pace within your group. It's not a technical climb, but it's sustained uphill walking on uneven ground for long enough that it matters. If even one person in the group is uncertain, the meadows alone are a complete, worthwhile day on their own, not a lesser consolation option. I've seen people treat the meadow as a warm-up they're obligated to push past, when for a lot of visitors it's genuinely the better fit.
Pace the lake trek honestly if you do go
If your group is taking the lake trek, build in real rest points rather than treating it as a single push. Nanga Parbat comes into view at various points along the way depending on cloud, and those are natural spots to stop anyway, use them. Carry enough water; there's less shade than the meadow gives you, and the exertion is steadier than a casual walk.
Weather turns faster up there than the meadow suggests
Conditions at the lake can shift with little warning, cloud rolling in over Nanga Parbat faster than it looked from the meadow below. If the group is tiring and weather is closing in, turning back is the right call, not a failure of the day. I've turned a group back once, about two-thirds of the way, when a squall built up faster than expected, and the meadow afterward was still a good ending to the day.
Don't let the lake become the only measure of a good visit
A day spent entirely in the meadow, without ever attempting the lake, is not a lesser Rama trip. It's a different one, suited to a different group. The honest version of this story is that Rama offers two genuinely different outings under one name, and picking the right one for the people actually there matters more than which one sounds more impressive afterward.
On the trek back down after the squall I mentioned, one of the group who'd struggled most on the way up turned out to have the clearest memory of the whole day, not the lake itself, which we'd barely seen properly before turning back, but the moment we'd all stopped together under a rock overhang waiting out the worst of the rain, sharing what food we had left. She brought that up again weeks later, unprompted, as her favourite part of the trip. It's a reminder that the outing you plan and the one people actually remember aren't always the same thing, and that's fine.
